Top 10 Reasons to Move to Las Vegas
So you’re thinking about moving to Las Vegas? My family came from California where we were born and raised. It took a lot for us to look elsewhere, but in the early 1990s, made the jump — and this was when Vegas was really just starting to come into its own.
The size of this town has doubled since then and the modernization is like no other city in the USA. Now, after 30 years of living here, we’ve raised our kids (who now have kids of their own) and we couldn’t be happier about our choice to move.
So, from the perspective of a person who live in Los Angeles, and then moved to this great city, I wanted to share my Top 10 reasons to move to Las Vegas.
You’ve probably heard about friends moving to Las Vegas or perhaps you even considered it yourself. You’ve probably also read that Las Vegas is one of the fastest-growing cities in the United States. With 294 days of sun per year (on average), a wide range of activities, and adjacent suburban communities that are perfect for raising a family, Vegas is not just a party city
The notion that Las Vegas is a city of gambling, partying, and lavish nightlife, really only refers to the Strip – that section of town occupied by resorts, casinos, and luxury hotels. Go a couple of miles in any direction and you’ll be in the suburbs where life is normal. People work, go to school, raise families and enjoy little communities of their own.
1. Say Goodbye To State Income Tax
Come to Las Vegas and you can kiss State income taxes goodbye. The state earns the money it needs from tourism, casino resort fees, and from its high sales tax rate of 8.25%.
Since Nevada has no state income tax, it has attracted many big comanies and entrepreneurs. If you have a great business idea, you’ll never find a better place than Las Vegas for putting that idea in motion.
2. Endless Entertainment Options
There’s so much to do here, you’ll never run out of options. Casinos, nightclubs, concerts, the famous Vegas shows have been around for decades. Do you want to go shoot machine guns? You can do it. Do you want to skydive? Indoor and outdoor options are available. Want to do a helicopter tour of the city? No problem.
Do you like sports? The Raiders football team is now in Las Vegas. The NHL’s Golden Knights hockey team made it to the Stanley Cup finals in their first season.
Do you like racing? We’ve got it. Several racing events happen at Las Vegas Motor Speedway every year. From pro drag racing to NASCAR, we’ve got it. You can even try your hand at racing in a NASCAR yourself or rent an exotic car at any number of places in town.
Do you like to ski? Didn’t know that it snows in Vegas? Less than an hour from Vegas is Mt Charleston ski resort.
There’s a reason why Las Vegas is the Entertainment Capital of the world.
3. Career Opportunities
Because we have so many hotels, resorts, casinos, restaurants, and tourist attractions, job seekers of any skill level can find employment here.
Despite the COVID shutdown in late 2020, Vegas has sprung back to almost normal activity levels. The Las Vegas Global Economic Alliance, (which consists of technology, health care, logistics, manufacturing, and financial services) continue to thrive and expand.
4. Retirement Communities and Services
Because of the low cost of living in Las Vegas, many retirees come here because of the easy access to health services, entertainment, public transportation, good weather, and low-cost buffets (!!)
Affordable real estate is still available and the abundance of single-story homes make Vegas a top choice among retirees. People on fixed incomes find Las Vegas to be almost irresistible here.
5. Sporting Events Abound
Do you play golf? Choose from more than 70 golf courses. Bob Hope would not be bored here.
Yes, we play sports here.AS mentioned earlier, the Las Vegas Raiders (a new NFL Team) will play in the all-new Allegiance Stadium. Our own Vegas Golden Knights (a NHL Ice Hockey Team) made the city proud by making it to the finals in their pursuit of the Stanly Cup (Go Knights!!) 
The WNBA’ Las Vegas Aces (a Women’s Basketball team) came to our fine city before the 2018 season. The Las Vegas Aviators (Minor League Baseball Team), also call Vegas home.
There are major bowling tournaments, innumerable boxing events, UFC fights, and a huge Rodeo that takes place in Vegas. If you count the other special events hosted by casinos, there’s something to see every week of every year.
6. Are You Into Outdoor Activities?
You’ve come to the right place. Scenic locations surround Las Vegas, even beyond the nighttime activities on the Strip. Take a 30-minute drive to Valley of Fire State Park and the adjacent Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area. You can hike, bike, or just take pictures of the incredible views.
For watersports, head over to the Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Take a 30-minute drive to Mt. Charleston ski resort to beat the heat and while you’re there. Depending on the time of year bring your mountain bike, or go for a hike, maybe take a little horseback ride, or jump on your snowboard.
We’re not far from Boulder City if you fancy a small-town feel. Getting to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, LA, or Utah can be done by car in a matter of hours.
7. Las Vegas Living and Playing Expenses
The money flowing in from the tourism industry helps keep costs. When you living in Las Vegas, you’ll find that everything is surprisingly affordable compared to other major cities.
Even utility costs are well below the national average in Las Vegas. Property taxes are also highly competitive and reasonable.
Before moving to Las Vegas, you should consider the low cost of living here. Your money will stretch farther, leaving you more “play” money. This improves a family’s quality of life.
Gasoline prices are well below the national average. And if you drive an electric car, there are charging stations at every hotel, casino, and most public parking lots.
8. The Weather in Las Vegas
Las Vegas enjoys more than 294 days of sunshine each year. East coasters and people who come from humid climates delight in the lack of snow or humidity (it’s a dry heat!!)
With about 4” of rain each year, it’s just enough to keep our green areas green and you can throw away your winter tires and snow chains.
Winters are nearly indistinguishable from spring, as they are mostly short and mild. Hot weather typically runs from June to September. Houses here are very well insulated and energy-efficient air conditioners do a great job in any building built after 2000.
July through September are the hot months and most people go from an air-conditioned house to an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned office.
For those three months, temps are usually around 102 degrees, but the evenings are still in the 80s. The other 9 months of the year are very temperate. Daytime highs in December hover around 60 degrees.
9. Newer, Master Planned Communities
Las Vegas is a relatively new city and much of the suburban developments were built in the last 25 years. As such, the communities surrounding the Las Vegas Downtown areas are master-planned communities. They were built with families in mind. This means newer, accessible schools for all grades, shopping centers, malls, dining, movie theaters, strip malls, and all the things you can expect from other more established suburbs. The difference is, most of the suburban communities are new or newer, shinier, and more modern. Parking is better, access is better and services are better.
Most of them include extensive recreational amenities like ponds, lakes, streams, baseball diamonds, biking trails, golf courses, expansive parks, and jogging trails.
One other thing worth mentioning here: I know people who literally never go to The Strip unless they have out-of-towners visiting. In fact, many of my friends rarely leave Summerlin, where we live. Summerlin is to las Vegas what Pasadena is to Los Angeles – you can see the lights of Los Angeles from your hilltop home, but you don’t need to go there if you don’t want to.
Our kids were raised in local schools, blocks from our home, and went into the city for entertainment when they chose to. The suburbs are quiet, safe, drama-free and friendly.
10. Fine Dining
In case you’ve missed it, the Las Vegas fine dining is on par with any city in any country. Many top chefs and top restaurants call Las Vegas home and that includes restaurants off The Strip. Yes, that includes sushi. Our fine dining is certainly one of the Top 10 reasons to move to Las Vegas. 
Moving is a big change in your life. If you’re looking to live a better lifestyle, more affordably but you’re not willing to give up the amenities of being near a “big city,” give Vegas a look.
